Energy Efficiency Rating for our New House

This morning it's -4c in Canberra. Cold enough to focus my mind on how warm our new house might be in comparison to our current renter.

All houses in Canberra must have an Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) and it's astonishing how many properties are so inefficient.

The house we rent has a score of 1, the house we are buying has a score of 3.5

What that means in potential energy dollar savings....

EER Image

We can easily achieve a score of 5 simply by installing drapes with pelmets and sealing door gaps on 3 doors.

In an age of Global Warming and diminishing resources I'm stunned that the National Capital of Australia is commissioning a new Power Generation Plant worth millions instead of providing a retrofit service for current houses.

Interesting system. I don't think we (US) have any comparable 'house efficiency' measuring system, or at least not mandatory. Got 'em on washers and dryers and microwaves and all sorts of household stuffs - just not the house itself.

I'm totally convinced my current owned house is much better than the previous rented one I was in because it is (a) bigger and (b) the AC unit doesn't have to run full-time to keep the house near setpoint. That unfortunately doesn't translate into anything that is directly comparable to my neighbor's house or the next development to come, or help me know how I can improve it other than by guessing at stuff.

Cool system.

uh... minus 4 C? Holy crap that's like really cold! We just got rain so the 110+ F has dropped to slightly under 100 F, but now it's humid.

Sorry to hear it's cold in Oz mate, cos it's hot in Scotland for a change.

Not much better here though in saving energy or the planet, as we're throwing up wind farms like there's no tomorrow in Scotland, yet Scottish shipyards are about to design build the world's biggest nuclear powered subs and British Navy destroyers - given up banging my head!

P.S. Forgot to mention that in the winter it's normally - 10 - 15 here!
