If the New York Times are going broke it's good to they are still experimenting with their online presentation.

NYT Article Skimmer (Prototype) is a Jquery based application presenting a summary of main stories/articles by category.

As yet it doesn't gracefully fall back to any alternative if you have JS off.
Though a little sluggish, it works ok on my iPhone.
