Some scrambled thoughts on 2009 objectives.
A: I've liked new cars. I could rationalise em until the cows came home but basically they are a wank.
1. No matter how spiffy they are, they are just transport.
2. They cost buckets of money.
3. They depreciate quicker than Autumn leaves.
4. They bend very easily.
5. Their production is energy intensive.
So, if I buy a car this year, it will be pre loved.
B: I want to be more energy neutral
1. Canberra is one of the sunniest, windiest joints in Oz.
2. The Government gives an almost 50% rebate on Solar Electric generation.
3. Apart from lights and electronics, our house is powered by Natural Gas.
Conclusion: For less than the price of a new car, I can have a second hand Honda Civic Hybrid ( 4.7 litres per 100 klms. My little Audi A3 gets 7.4 ) plus a Solar Electric plant that will earn income because we will be feeding the grid.
My original new car budget was $33,000 +.
I intend to get both for less than $30,000.
I'll report back in August 2009.
