This fine New Zealander and his life long friend Tenzing_Norgay, go into the history books as the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.
Sir_Edmund_Hillary was respected more for what he achieved as a humanitarian.

His Himalaya Trust raised about $US250,000 ($279,500) a year and he personally helped build schools, hospitals, bridges, pipelines and even an airfield.

The mountain

Now money buys a high tech ascent and the mountain still claims lives.
The days of rope, canvas and blokes like Sir Ed are long gone.
